Parasite becomes the 1st film not in English to win the original screenplay Oscar in 17 years
Parasite just emerged victorious in a competitive Oscars category, becoming one of its rare foreign-language winners.
Bong Joon-ho's film on Sunday won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, becoming only the sixth movie not in the English language to win this Oscar, and the first in 17 years, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The Original Screenplay Oscar most recently went to a foreign-language film in 2003, when Pedro Almodóvar's Talk to Her won. Before that, A Man and a Woman, Divorce Italian Style, The Red Balloon, and Marie-Louise were also non-English language Original Screenplay winners.
Parasite's win here was no lock considering it was competing with Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood, and Tarantino had previously won two Original Screenplay Oscars for Pulp Fiction and Django Unchained. Parasite also defeated 1917, Marriage Story, and Knives Out for the Oscar.
Prior to this win, Parasite had collected screenplay victories at the Writers Guild of America Awards and the British Academy Film Awards.
