Paramedic suffers heart attack while performing CPR on heart attack victim

A 40-year-old Detroit paramedic who suffered a heart attack while giving CPR to a man having one is recovering, doctors say.

Joseph Hardman, a 15-year paramedic, was performing CPR on the unidentified man inside an EMS vehicle on Friday when he began having chest pains.

Both men were rushed to the Detroit Medical Center's Cardiac Care Unit. Doctors used stents on both men to clear blockages in their arteries. Hardman's blockage was so serious, doctors say, chances are he would've died had he suffered the heart attack anywhere else.

“If I hadn’t been in the position I was in, I would be deceased,” Hardman told Detroit's WXYZ-TV Monday.

Doctors expect Hardman to make a full recovery. The man he was treating is said to be doing well.
