WHO panel urges caution on dengue vaccine, dealing blow to Sanofi

Dengvaxia is the first licensed vaccine that protects against dengue.

An expert panel that advises the World Health Organization recommended that the world’s only licensed dengue vaccine be administered only to people who have had medically confirmed previous bouts of the disease — a blow both to vaccine maker Sanofi Pasteur.

The Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization said that it would be unsafe to give the vaccine to people who are dengue naïve — never before infected — because data shows it increases their risk of having a severe dengue infection.
