Panel to announce whether Quebec doctor who killed his kids to be released
MONTREAL - A former doctor who was found not criminally responsible in the stabbing deaths of his two children will find out today if he'll be released from a psychiatric hospital.
Guy Turcotte was ordered to undergo treatment after his trial last summer and maintains he's a changed man.
Five experts will rule on whether the Quebecer can be released without conditions or with restrictions.
Their other option is to keep him detained in a Montreal psychiatric hospital.
In February 2009, Turcotte stabbed five-year-old Olivier and three-year-old Anne-Sophie as they slept in their beds.
He admitted causing the deaths but denied intent.
Turcotte testified at his trial that he was distraught over the breakup of his marriage and that he didn't remember committing the act.
There was a public outcry over the jury's verdict, and his ex-wife has said she opposes his release.
Turcotte insists he's a changed man who has fought off depression, is ready to confront an angry public and is looking forward to continuing therapy outside hospital walls.
