Palm Coast man fleeing deputies in St. Johns killed in rollover after hitting spike strips

A Palm Coast man, fleeing from St. Johns County deputies, was killed Thursday evening when his SUV rolled over a set of spike strips, rear-ended another vehicle, and overturned several times, according to police.

The wreck occurred at about 5:20 p.m. near St. Augustine Shores on U.S. 1 at Shores Boulevard, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.

The 36-year-old Palm Coast man was fleeing north on U.S. 1 when he hit the spike strips at the Shores Drive intersection. The man continued to flee and rear-ended a pickup truck driven by a 56-year-old St. Augustine man.

After the impact, the SUV flipped several times and the driver was ejected. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the FHP report. The St. Augustine man suffered minor injuries.
