Palm Beach County students had Wednesday off school. Here's why

Get ready, school is out... for one day only!

Palm Beach County public school students had Wednesday, April 10 off in observance of Eid Al-Fitr, the end of Ramadan, Islam's holy month of fasting, prayer and reflection.

In 2022, Palm Beach County's School Board approved calendars for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school years that included days off on April 10, 2024 and March 31, 2025 for the holiday.

The holiday is "extra special" this year because it's the first year that students in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties will have the day off, according to Samir Kakli, president of the South Florida Muslim Federation.

"Students will be able to celebrate the day in religious tradition with their family and friends without worrying about having to miss school," Kakli said.

A traditional Eid day begins with Muslims offering Eid Salah (prayer) at local mosques and then meeting with their families to celebrate the holiday together.

In Palm Beach County, students will return to school on Thursday, April 11.
