Palisade Fire Department responds to apartment explosion

PALISADE, Colo. (KREX) — The Palisade Fire Department responded to a report of an explosion at an apartment complex Friday morning.

At approximately 7:15 a.m. Friday, the Grand Junction Regional Communication Center received a report of an explosion at an apartment complex in the 900 Block of Iowa Avenue. When fire crews arrived, the six-unit complex was fully engulfed in flames.

Five agencies responded to assist the Palisade Fire Department: Clifton Fire Department, Grand Junction Police Department, Palisade Police Department, Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and the De Beque Marshal’s Office. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation, the Division of Fire Prevention and Control and Xcel Energy were also on scene to assist.

The fire was extinguished within an hour and a half; officials say the building is a total loss. Six people were routed to the Palisade Community Center where The Red Cross is helping to provide services to those displaced.

Initial reports indicated one person was possibly trapped inside, but officials say they are still unable to confirm that information. Officials will be at the Palisade Community Center to answer questions.

The fire’s origin is unknown. The situation remains active and there are no further details that can be released at this time; further information will be released as it becomes available.
