Padres send Margevicius to Double-A, reinstate Wingenter

After an impressive start to the season for Nick Margevicius, the San Diego Padres sent the rookie left-hander back to Double-A Amarillo on Sunday after his recent struggles continued to mount.

The Padres also sent right-handed reliever Gerardo Reyes to Triple-A El Paso, while right-hander Cal Quantrill was recalled from El Paso and right-hander Trey Wingenter was reinstated from the injured list.

Margevicius (2-5, 4.96 ERA) gave up just one run in each of his first three major league starts, giving him a 1.69 ERA 16 innings into his big league career after never pitching above Single-A previously. But the month of May was a struggle as he gave up a combined 14 earned runs in three outings, the most recent Saturday when he gave up six runs over four innings in a loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Reyes also pitched Saturday, giving up one run over two-thirds of an inning. He is 2-0 this season in seven relief appearances with an 18.00 ERA, mostly due to four runs allowed in an April 13 outing against the Diamondbacks and a May 12 appearance against the Rockies when he gave up three runs.

Quantrill, who had a 3.60 ERA in two earlier starts with the Padres, was 4-1 at El Paso this season with a 4.80 ERA. Wingenter, who had a 2.93 ERA in 16 innings with the Padres earlier this season, had been on the IL because of right shoulder inflammation.
