Pa. Turnpike reopens after crashes hurt 30
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Pennsylvania Turnpike outside Philadelphia has reopened more than seven hours after a series of crashes injured 30 people and caused a miles-long traffic jam.
Turnpike spokesman Bill Capone says all eastbound lanes between the Willow Grove and Bensalem exits reopened shortly before 4 p.m. The westbound lanes reopened about a half-hour before that.
Two major chain-reaction pileups and smaller fender-benders involving tractor trailers and scores of cars were reported just before 8:30 a.m., in the middle of rush hour and about five hours after a storm that dropped a foot of snow in the area finally moved out.
State police suspect sun glare and ice played roles in the crashes. Motorists say the turnpike was very slick.
