Ozone levels rising on the Maine coast Thursday

May 23—Coastal Maine is expected to experience elevated levels of ground-level ozone as temperature rise Thursday and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection issued an "unhealthy for sensitive groups" air quality warning for high elevations at Acadia National Park.

Sensitive groups include people with respiratory issues such as asthma, or other health conditions, such as heart conditions, older Mainers and children. These groups are still recommended to be outside, but the DEP is advising people to limit exertion and to avoid "prolonged" outside activities at high elevations at Acadia National Park.

All of coastal Maine is in the "moderate" category on Thursday for ozone levels and particle pollution, while northern Maine and the western mountains are in the "moderate" category for particle pollution and "good" category for ozone levels.

For areas in the "moderate" category, sensitive groups should watch for symptoms such as shortness of breath, and also should consider limiting prolonged activities outside or high exertion.

The entire state is projected to be in the "good" category on Friday for ozone and particle pollution.
