Owner searching for loose primate in Walterboro

WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCBD) – A search is underway for a loose primate in the Walterboro area.

Officials with the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office said the animal’s owner was attempting to capture it and had called in assistance.

The search was taking place on Mallard Street, according to the sheriff’s office. Video posted to social media shows what appears to be a baboon, and officials believe the animal was being kept as a pet.

It does not appear that the animal has shown signs of aggression toward any humans; however, people should not approach it and only report sightings by calling the sheriff’s office at 843-549-2211.

Officials with the sheriff’s office said they received a report on Thursday that the animal attempted to attack a citizen’s dog in their yard. They advise people to monitor their animals while they are outside.

“If you live in the area of Hiers Corner Rd/Mallard Street please monitor your pets while they are outside as a precaution. There is a primate on the loose that could be stressed and we ask you to not approach it,” the sheriff’s office said.
