Owens-Illinois investigates possible bribery

Owens-Illinois Inc. is investigating potential bribery at its operations overseas, according to a document filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday.

The glass container company said in the filing that it is conducting an internal investigation into conduct at some of its operations overseas that may have violated the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Owens-Illinois said it disclosed the probe to the U.S. Department of Justice and the SEC this month.

The company did not disclose where it is investigating. It said it is unable to predict the duration, scope or result of its investigation. It also could not predict if either agency would take any legal action. At this time, the company doesn't expect the investigation will materially hurt its finances.

A representative for Owens-Illinois could not immediately be reached for comment. The SEC and Department of Justice declined to comment.

Owens-Illinois, based in Perrysburg, Ohio, makes glass containers such as beer and wine bottles. Its shares fell 37 cents to close at $19.56 Friday.
