Overnight HRBT closures expected for Sunday

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will be conducting routine tide gate testing at the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel (HRBT) on Sunday.

The testing is scheduled to start at 2 a.m. on Sunday, May 12, and aims to ensure tunnel facilities will be prepared for severe weather conditions. Eastbound and westbound lanes are expected to close for up to an hour during testing.

The full closure schedule can be found below:

  • 2 a.m. through 3 a.m. – all eastbound lanes closed

  • 3 a.m. through 4 a.m. – all westbound lanes closed

VDOT encourages drivers to use the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel as an alternate route.
