After Overland Park robbery, police warn of estate sale risks
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — An early morning burglary at an Overland Park home has police warning residents about estate sales.
People in the industry say this problem has persisted for too long.
What was supposed to be a normal day at that Overland Park home, hosting an estate sale was anything but.
Police allege Robert Stewart broke in at 3 a.m. within six minutes of him kicking in the window under the back deck, police were at the home.

“Have some type of security device watching the house rather that’s a ring camera or cameras inside the home,” Ofc. John Lacy with the Overland Park Police Department said.
When police arrived, Stewart was gone, but a neighbor spotted him crouching in a nearby yard where officers arrested him. Now he’s charged with felony burglary.
But this isn’t an isolated problem for the estate sale industry.
“We’ve actually been robbed twice,” said Deon Rasmuson, co-owner of Primetime Estate Sales. “The main thing they do the estate sales dot net site is where people go to get there information that’s where all the estate sales are posted.”
But he says posting on these sites is a must to get people interested in what’s for sale.

The only remedy to what both say is a growing problem is to force homeowners and sellers to take more security measures and neighbors with a watchful eye are a plus.
“It matters because it’s a violation of what we do. My message would be if you hear about someone doing this or you see someone doing this just make sure you tell somebody,” Rasmuson said.

As for Stewart he made his first appearance in court Thursday afternoon and remains in the Johnson County Jail.
