Over 440,000 mugs from Starbucks gift sets recalled after users got burned or cut

Metallic mugs sold in Starbucks gift sets might handle hot liquids — like Starbucks coffee — so badly that users could get injured. That’s why Nestlé USA recalled about 440,500 of the mugs Thursday.

“If microwaved or filled with extremely hot liquid, the mugs can overheat or break, posing burn and laceration hazards,” the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall announcement said.

And, Nestlé knows about 12 mugs “overheating or breaking resulting in 10 injuries, including nine severe burns/blisters on fingers or hands, and one cut on a finger.”

The 11-ounce and 16-ounce mugs were sold in one of four 2023 holiday gift sets: Starbucks Peppermint and Classic Hot Cocoas and Mug; Starbucks Holiday Gift Set with 2 Mugs; Starbucks Holiday Blend Coffee and Mug; and Starbucks Classic Hot Cocoa and Mug.

If you have any of the mugs, take them back to the store where they were bought for a full refund in cash or gift card. Or, you can request a check from Nestlé USA by clicking on that hyperlink, going to “Leave Us a Message,” clicking “Complaint,” picking “Recall” and uploading a photo of the mug or gift set identifier code. Then, complete and send the form.
