(KRON) — Over 400 stolen vehicles were recovered in Oakland and the East Bay in a targeted state law enforcement operation, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday. During an eight-week period, the California Highway Patrol recovered 414 stolen vehicles, arrested 181 suspects and seized 31 crime-linked firearms.

The suspects arrested were linked to organized crime, carjackings and other crimes, Newsom’s office said. The arrests and seizures were made as part of state-backed undercover sting operations and law enforcement surges.

“Eight weeks into our ongoing Oakland operation, the men and women of the California Highway Patrol continue to show results,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. “Through continued partnerships with our allied law enforcement agencies in the East Bay, we are improving public safety and helping to restore peace of mind to hardworking Californians.”

Specific charges suspects have been arrested for include:

  • Possession of stolen property

  • Auto theft

  • Transportation of narcotics

  • DUI

  • Felony gun possession

  • Arrests for outstanding warrants

Undercover CHP operations are ongoing and uniformed CHP patrols in Oakland the East Bay are coordinating with allied local law enforcement agencies, according to Newsom’s office. Gov. Newsom announced the initial CHP surge on Feb. 14.

Wednesday’s announcement on the Oakland crackdown follows a similar announcement from the governor on Tuesday regarding the success of drug enforcement operations in San Francisco.
