Over 40-year-old soccer fields at Sacramento park to undergo renovations

(FOX40.COM) — A park in Sacramento’s Pocket neighborhood is set to undergo renovations, according to the city of Sacramento.

Renovations at Garcia Bend Park will include improving the soccer fields, which have been used for four decades by the Greenhaven Soccer Club. Garcia Bend Park, located near the Sacramento River on 7654 Pocket Road, has three soccer fields and has stood there for 44 years.

The renovation concept includes implementing decomposed granite with picnic tables near the tennis courts, putting in Bermuda sod that will extend to sidewalks and walkways between two of the fields, and replacing ornamental grass with bark.

The park renovations are intended to focus on reducing water usage and “preparing the park for the impacts of climate change,” city officials said

Renovations are expected to be completed in August 2025.

Funding for the renovation project will come from $1.35 million of state funding secured by Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen. The assembly member presented the check to the city of Sacramento and the Greenhaven Soccer Club in September 2023.

“Submitting our proposal for the funding, we were determined to offer a design that would benefit the entire community, not just our soccer club,” Greenhaven Soccer Club president Beth Koster said in a statement. “We believe the result will be one of the most environmentally progressive parks in the city.”
