Over $171K awarded to Southern Tier programs supporting senior citizens

SOUTHERN TIER, N.Y. (WETM) – United Way of the Southern Tier awarded over $171,000 to local organizations that assist senior citizens in Chemung and Steuben counties yesterday through its Senior Supports Fund.

The Senior Supports Fund was created through an anonymous donation to United Way to further assist senior citizens in the community in living a comfortable and happy life.

The grants that were awarded on Monday, May 13, were given to 13 organizations as part of a six-year commitment to invest $1 million in strengthening programming for local senior citizens.

The amount that was awarded this year totaled $171,705.

“The Senior Supports Fund makes life better for seniors and encourages best practices by the organizations that serve them. We are excited by the 13 programs that are receiving grants this year,” said United Way President and CEO Stephen M. Hughes.

Southern Tier police agencies to receive state funding

A breakdown of the organizations and the programs that were awarded grant money this year are listed below.

Award recipients

  • Arbor Housing an Development – $20,000 to support home repairs and accessibility for the elderly.

  • Bampa’s House – $8,100 to support repairs to the exterior bricks, foundation and steps.

  • Chemung County Department of Aging and Long Term Care – $20,000 to support a pilot program to alleviate unsafe conditions, remove debris and address code violations.

  • Chemung County Habitat for Humanity – $12,000 to support a program to provide ramps for homes.

  • Corning Meals on Wheels – $18,260 to support the purchase of microwavable food containers and an online scheduling tool.

  • Family Services of Chemung County – $5,400 to support tuition for two personal care aide students and for the purchase of office equipment.

  • Home & Health Care Services – $10,000 to support a new clinical information module computer program.

  • Hornell Area Family YMCA – $5,000 to support a senior “Lunch and Learn” program.

  • Meals on Wheels of Chemung County – $6,445 to support the purchase of a reach-in freezer.

  • Pro Action Meals on Wheels – $14,000 to support the purchase of a dishwasher and a three-door refrigerator.

  • Neighborhood Transformation Center – $17,500 to support a “Grandparents Raising Grandchildren” program and for safety repairs to the building entry.

  • The Senior Center/Chemung County Family Fitness Center – $10,000 to support the purchase of exercise equipment.

  • Steuben Senior Services Fund – $25,000 to support the enrollment of more seniors into Full Circle America.

These grants were awarded in addition to annual allocations that are made by United Way through donations from the public to the Community Campaign.

Grant applications will be accepted by United Way again in the spring of 2025.
