CLEVELAND (WJW) – Calling the actions “unacceptable,” mayor Justin Bibb and several city leaders are speaking out about a fire that was set under the chandelier at Playhouse Square and a car driving in circles around the fire.

The incident took place early Sunday morning.

“This level of lawlessness can have tragic consequences and is unacceptable,” the mayor’s statement reads. “Our division of Police cannot act on information we don’t have, so we need community members to come forward – and remember that tips can be reported anonymously. Residents and local businesses can also help by registering their cameras with our SAFE SMART CLE camera-sharing program. One camera could help solve a case and save a life.”

Video of the incident has been circulating on social media. Police say they responded to the area after being alerted to the incident by 911 dispatchers.

Once officers arrived they noticed a large crowd. No one was injured and no damage was reported. Skid marks could still be seen on the road Tuesday morning.

“It’s totally unacceptable,” said Cleveland Council President Blaine Griffin. “I am angry as hell, something has to happen. This is one of the worst weekends I have seen in a long time.”

Councilman Mike Polensek agrees, saying he is concerned because the city police department is short hundreds of officers.

“Outrageous when someone thinks they can take over a main street in downtown Cleveland and build a fire underneath a million dollar chandelier,” Polensek said. “Tells us a whole lot. Where are the police?”

Cleveland Sgt. Freddy Diaz says officers are investigating and are asking anyone with information on the incident or the people involved to call police as soon as possible.
