Oskar Sundqvist tears ACL, out for rest of Blues season

ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis Blues suffer a big blow to their fading playoff hopes. Oskar Sundqvist, a steady fourth-line forward, will miss the rest of the 2023-24 season with a torn ACL.

Sundqvist suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during Monday’s loss to the Vegas Golden Knights. He left the game in the second period with assistance from trainers.

The Blues say Sundqvist will be reevaluated in six months, so there’s a chance the injury could hold him back for the start of next season as well.

Sundqvist, now 30 years old, dressed in 71 games for the Blues this season, collecting six goals and 15 assists.

A fan favorite over six years and two stints with the Blues, Sundqvist is one of just six players still with the Blues since their 2019 Stanley Cup championship. The Blues brought him back on a one-year deal ahead of the 2023-24 season after moving him at the trade deadline in 2022. Sundqvist recently agreed to a two-year contract extension through the 2026 NHL season.

Meanwhile, the Blues missed a big opportunity to gain ground in the NHL playoff race Monday. St. Louis hosted the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday and fell 2-1 in overtime. Vegas currently holds the last Western Conference playoff seed with 86 points and 10 games to go. The Blues are the first team out of the West’s playoff picture right now with 80 points and 10 games to go.

The Blues return to action sans-Sundqvist against the Calgary Flames on Thursday. Puck drop is 7 p.m. CT.
