Oshkosh Public Library’s new patron behavior policy aims for ‘atmosphere of respect and safety,’ director says.

OSHKOSH – Changes are coming to Oshkosh Public Library.

Starting Tuesday, OPL will enforce a more comprehensive patron behavior policy shaped by community and staff feedback.

Approved by the Oshkosh Public Library Board of Trustees last month, the revised policy includes expectations for patrons to engage productively with library resources, clear consequences for individuals engaging in disruptive or threatening behavior, and a firm stance against any type of bullying or harassment.

Additionally, the policy outlines guidelines for noise levels, electronic device usage, and eating and drinking in public spaces.

There are also new restrictions regarding the size of bags or items taken into the library.

“These rules are designed to ensure that every patron can fully use the library without worry,” said new Public Library Director Darryl Eschete.

“We are committed to upholding an atmosphere of respect and safety for everyone who visits us. These rules help staff to maintain a positive environment and experience for everyone, and we appreciate Oshkosh helping us to keep the library orderly, clean and comfortable,” he added.

A grace period for policy enforcement will be provided, coupled with support for staff.

The updated policy will be posted on the library’s website and displayed throughout the building, which is at 106 Washington Ave.
