OSF hosts Donate Life Month ceremonies

Apr. 29—DANVILLE — One year ago, OSF HealthCare told the story of Quintin Porter, a Mahomet man, who was facing "kidney or coffin," but who got a jumpstart to a new lease on life thanks to an unlikely source: his ex-girlfriend from high school.

Today, Porter continues to advocate for organ donation and educate people about what to expect with a new organ.

To mark the end of Donate Life Month, Porter will be the featured speaker at a flag raising ceremony at OSF HealthCare Heart of Mary Medical Center in Urbana. Among the other speakers is Cheryl Weaver, a longtime pharmacist at OSF who was a kidney recipient in 2020.

OSF HealthCare Sacred Heart Medical Center in Danville also will host a ceremony to mark Donate Life Month featuring speakers from the hospital and Gift of Hope. In Illinois, nearly 4,000 people are waiting for a life-saving organ, according to Gift of Hope.

There will be Donate Life Month flag raisings at the ceremonies.

The Danville event will be at 1:30 p.m. today at OSF HealthCare Sacred Heart Medical Center, 812 N. Logan Ave., Danville.
