New Orleans residents frustrated over street flooding

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The skies opened up, dumping several inches of rain in a matter of a few hours across New Orleans.

Uptown, Downtown, the French Quarter and Mid-city all got hit hard with homes and businesses just inches away from taking in water.

“It makes me wonder why we’re not cleaning out our drains because all along St. Charles Avenue and Magazine Street different areas are flooded, and you can tell just all the drains are full,” New Orleans resident Melissa Zweibaum said.

Driving proved to be a challenge, and in some instances, stranding motorists.

“We were watching cars go through and it was kind of up to halfway up the tire, and by the end I think it was about 30 minutes of raining. Like, cars are submerged in the water,” New Orleans resident Severan Chambers said.

These residents living off of Carrollton Avenue are no strangers to these kinds of conditions, and they say they are tired of dealing with it almost every time it rains.

“I know a lot of people in the area are really frustrated by it because we just don’t really see much change. You see them come in, and they’ll dig up a street and then they’ll leave it for a couple of months and then you have to put a request in to have something happen. So, I think we just want to see some change. We want to see something happen,” Chambers said.

In the meantime, some are taking matters into their own hands and calling on their neighbors to do the same.

“It’s very frustrating, and I think as a community, we need to step up and clean our own drains and not rely upon the city because we can tell the city is not doing its job,” Zweibaum said.
