New Orleans Pride Center to open Tremé location

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A new pride center is set to open in Tremé and members of the local and visiting LGBTQ2IA+ community have been invited to celebrate its grand opening in true New Orleans flair.

Happening Saturday, April 6, the New Orleans Pride Center will open its new location at 600 North Broad Avenue at the Broadside.

Board Member Noel Twilbeck says the city is a known destination for the community to celebrate its authenticity through year-round events. Twilbeck says the center’s opening will signal to tourists that New Orleans has celebrations for all to attend, as well as support for those attending.

“New Orleans needs and deserves a robust Community Center serving and supporting the LBGTQ2IA+ Community. The legislation being proposed and passed that limits or bans life-saving health care to transgender individuals coupled with the increase in physical threats, makes having a safe space more critical than ever” said Twilbeck. “The physical and psychological safety of everyone in the LGBTQ2IA+ community is being threatened.”

Pride Center operators say it will be a safe space and hub for connection and resources, providing LGBTQ+ members of all ages access to social groups, educational workshops and more services.

“I wish the Pride Center was open a few years ago when my son came out as transgender. We were struggling to find support and resources for him and our family who adores him. One of my goals as a New Orleans Pride Center board member is to bring visibility, resources and support to both individuals and families who are a part of this loving community,” said Local mom and LASPCA CEO Ana Zorrilla.

The event starts at 2 p.m. and will include music by Mia Boarders and drag performances by April May.

Food trucks will be on site.

At 4 p.m., center operators say a traditional second line will be led by the Storyville Stompers to the new Pride Center at 2762 Orleans Ave.
