Orleans Parish coroner identifies May 5 French Quarter shooting victim

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans Police Department has identified the man shot and killed in the French Quarter on Sunday, May 5.

Around 8:38 p.m., officers were patrolling in the 500 block of Bienville Street when they were called to respond to a shooting in the area.

Upon arrival, officers said they found a man, identified by the Orleans Parish Coroner’s office as 26-year-old Juan Matthews, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Closing arguments in trial of former JPSO deputies begin Friday

Matthews was pronounced dead on the scene.

Moments after the shooting, NOPD officers said 37-year-old Reginald J. Batiste was seen leaving the scene when he was taken in for questioning.

Through an investigation, officers determined Batiste was responsible for the shooting and an arrest warrant was issued on a charge of second-degree murder.

He was booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center.
