New Orleans City Council approves changes to lease agreement in NOPD headquarters relocation
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans City Council approved changes to the city’s agreement to relocate the NOPD headquarters on Tuesday, April 30.
The NOPD headquarters will be moved from its location on Broad Street to a high-rise on Poydras Street.
In a change to the original 10-year lease agreement, the city now has the option to end the lease after five years if a better location becomes available.

City of New Orleans Chief Administrative Officer Gilbert Montaño noted that the city council and the Cantrell administration worked together to make the changes, and that it is important for the move to go forward, even though owning the future site would be better than leasing it.
Speaking of the current NOPD headquarters on Broad Street, Montaño said the need for the move is immediate.
“The maintenance alone that we pay for that building, I’m not just talking leaks, plumbers, elevators, I’m talking like the janitorial services; All that will come at significant savings in the long run,” said Montaño.

The council also approved the leasing of three floors of the building on Poydras Street instead of two.
The move is expected to begin this summer.
