According to a study by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, our brain reacts in a very similar way to both of these very different emotions. Surgical breast specialist Dr. Kristi Funk explains why. “Both pain and pleasure have their genesis in the hypothalamus in your brain. So, if the same little organ in your brain is outputting pain signals and pleasure signals, then maybe the translation on your face will look the same,” she says.
