Organizers call 'Day at the Capital of South Georgia' a success

May 9—VALDOSTA — The Valdosta Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has declared its inaugural "Day at the Capital of South Georgia" event a success.

Held in collaboration with the City of Valdosta, the event, which took place May 6, brought together community leaders and other residents to engage in meaningful dialogue and collaboration.

The highlight of the event was the "State of the City" address delivered by Mayor Scott James Matheson, providing attendees with valuable insights into the current affairs and prospects of Valdosta. City Manager Richard Hardy and Assistant City Manager Catherine Ammons extended warm gratitude to the organization for choosing Valdosta as the location for this landmark event, underscoring the city's commitment to fostering partnerships that benefit the community.

Matheson emphasized the importance of events like this in Valdosta, stating, "The Valdosta Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority, Inc.'s inaugural Day at the Capital of South Georgia signifies the strength of our community bonds and the collaborative spirit that drives progress in our city. Hardy added, "Collaborating with esteemed organizations such as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is essential for our city's growth and development. In addition to the insightful presentations by the speakers, the event featured representatives from local school districts, public health officials, and various other sectors, offering diverse perspectives and addressing pressing issues facing the community.

— LeAnn McCall, assistant superintendent of teaching and learning with Lowndes County Schools.

— Dr. Christina Sneed, assistant superintendent of student support services.

— Dr. Sheila Thomas, retired educator and author.

— Lakeatta Tonge, nurse and maternal nurse advocate.

— Thameka Miller Akpan, voting rights advocate.
