PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Friends of Timberline, the nonprofit organization that helps maintain Mount Hood’s historic Timberline Lodge, is requesting public donations to help pay for repairs after an attic fire badly damaged the building’s roof on the night of April 18.

Friends of Timberline Manager Randi Black told KOIN 6 News that that nonprofit is hoping to raise $100,000 for the repairs. The lodge, which was built along Mount Hood’s south-facing slope in 1937, is owned by the U.S. Forest Service and managed by a private company.

“That won’t cover all the damage, but that would be our contribution toward it,” Black said.

Friends of Timberline has collected more than $7,200 from 55 different donors since Sunday afternoon. Black said that she’s spent the past two days typing thank you letters to the long list of donors.

“People are being really generous,” she said.

All donations being collected in response to the fire will go directly toward fire clean-up, restoration and preservation efforts, the Friends of Timberline website states. Donations for the repairs can be made through the organization’s Fire Clean-up and Restoration Fund.

The ski resort was closed for several days due to the fire and subsequent water damage but was partially reopened on Sunday.

“The roof fire was contained quickly, and fire and subsequent water damage is benign and contained to the central areas of the Historic Lodge, including the headhouse and main lobby areas,” the Friends of Timberline website states. “However, a project of this scale will require significant funding both from governmental entities and private donations. If you would like to help support the clean-up and restoration efforts, any gift helps.”
