Oregon, Washington among states with tornado reports in 2024

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Spring is tornado season across much of the country, but the Pacific Northwest doesn’t always see years with recorded tornado reports.

Oregon and Washington have already reported at least one tornado in 2024. NOAA and The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center recorded the two Pacific Northwest tornadoes in the month of March. Those are just two of the 66 reported tornadoes in the third month of the year.

Oregon and Washington’s average yearly reported tornadoes only amount to three for each state each year. Of course, Oregon and Washington have the potential to see less or more tornadoes than that from year to year, but it pales in comparison to the central regions of the country. Not only is the number of Pacific Northwest tornadoes low, but the strength is usually weak, small and short-lived.

Tornado Alley stretches from the Great Plains to the Southeast and includes the Great Lakes and parts of the Northeast. The collision of colder and warmer air seen during the spring season is when the tornado threat remains the highest. Tornado reports have already climbed to 316 across the country as of April 17. The number of tornadoes reported across the country will continue to climb as the spring season progresses.

The KOIN 6 Weather Team will continue to track Oregon and Washington’s tornado threat year-round.
