To provide our community with important public safety information, the Statesman Journal is making this daily update related to the coronavirus free to read.

We'll update this story throughout the day with the latest news about coronavirus and its effects in Oregon on Wednesday, March 30.

387 new cases, 24 deaths

The Oregon Health Authority reported an additional 387 cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, along with 24 deaths.

Marion County accounted for 41 cases, while Polk County had one.

The majority of Wednesday's newly reported deaths occurred in 2021 and were added to the death toll after a data reconciliation, OHA said.

Three of the deaths were Marion County residents:

  • A 59-year-old man who died Sept. 5, 2021, at Carondelet St. Mary’s Medical Center.

  • A 73-year-old man who died Jan. 20 at Banner Boswell Medical Center.

  • A 97-year-old woman who died March 24 at Salem Hospital.

Hospitals statewide are treating 104 patients with COVID-19, including 15 in intensive care unit beds. The state's adult ICU bed capacity is 85% and non-ICU bed capacity is 91%.

Cases are down 98% since their peak in mid-January, according to the OHA's newest weekly COVID-19 report.

The state recorded 1,403 cases during the week of March 21-27, a decline of 21% from the week prior. COVID-19 test positivity rate was 2.7%.

New hospitalizations also declined by 5% compared to the previous week.

Second booster shots available

Second booster doses are now available in Oregon for certain immunocompromised individuals and individuals age 50 or older after approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup.

To qualify, people within those groups must have received an initial booster shot at least four months ago.

OHA said the state has sufficient vaccine supply to meet any increased demand. Currently, about 270,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines are distributed throughout the state.

“Existing supply is already strong, and the CDC is ready to send more doses if we need them," said Dr. Paul Cieslak, medical director for communicable diseases and immunizations in OHA’s Public Health Division.
