Oregon Air National Guard deems possibly damaged munition ‘safe’ following partial base shutdown

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — An incident at the Oregon Air National Guard is being investigated after a munition was potentially damaged during a transfer, leading to a temporary shut-down of a section of the facility and part of Northeast Cornfoot Road in Portland.

Though an explosive disposal team was called in at one point, the unspecified piece of military equipment was deemed safe within roughly two hours, officials said.

This all happened at the Oregon ANG’s 142nd wing located at 6801 NE Cornfoot Rd Friday morning. A spokesperson for the military base confirmed the temporary closure to KOIN 6 News. Oregon ANG First Sergeant Steven Conklin explained what took place in an email:

“An ordnance on base was potentially damaged during transfer, so out of an abundance of caution and following standard operating procedures we closed off a section of the base and small portion of Cornfoot Rd. with the assistance of Portland Police while our explosive ordnance disposal team made sure that the munition was safe. It was deemed safe within about 2 hours. This situation is currently under a safety investigation to determine why it occurred.”
