‘Orange Is the New Black’ Creator Jenji Kohan Inks Multi-Year Netflix Overall Deal

Jenji Kohan has signed a multi-year overall deal with Netflix, the streaming giant announced Friday.

“Current climate aside, it’s great to be in bed with Netflix,” Kohan said.

Kohan is the creator of the award-winning Netflix series “Orange Is the New Black” and an executive producer on Netflix’s “GLOW.” The former series has been nominated for 19 Emmy Awards during its five seasons, winning four. Under the new deal, Kohan will develop new original series and other projects.

“Bold, outspoken and totally fearless, Jenji has constantly raised the bar for storytelling at Netflix,” said Cindy Holland, vice president of original content at Netflix. “She possesses a rare and special talent to say what’s unspoken, choose the unexpected over the safe and drive the cultural conversation – and audiences love her for it. She has been with us from the beginning and we could not be more thrilled to continue working together over the coming years.”

Kohan is repped by CAA and attorney Robert Getman.

News of the deal comes after Netflix signed Shonda Rhimes to a multi-year production deal back in August. Rhimes, the super-producer behind hit shows like “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal,” will begin producing new series for Netflix while she continues to stay involved in her current broadcast series. Executive producer Betsy Beers will also come to Netflix with Rhimes, one of the most successful TV producers of the past decade.
