A new option for nursing students is coming to Aurora

AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — Colorado has a tremendous need for more nurses, and on Tuesday, HealthONE and Galen College of Nursing announced plans to open a new campus in Aurora.

The school will open at a temporary site at 3190 S. Vaughn Way while a new facility is built. The school is already accepting applications, and the first term will start July 8.

Galen will offer a two-year associate degree or a three-year bachelor’s degree.

“We want to ensure that we have the individuals ready in our facilities to take care of you, of your family,” said Jennifer Broekema, vice president of clinical education at HealthONE.

According to a recent study, there could be a shortage of 200,000 to 450,000 nurses nationwide in the next few years.

“We are growing so quickly that we just know that the need is outpacing the number of nurses who are available to work in our facilities,” Broekema said.

With an aging population, more nurses leaving the profession and not enough nursing school graduates, Broekema said many facilities are struggling to fill positions. She said there are good academic options in Colorado, but another option will help — and others agree.

“If you know about nursing colleges, most of them have pretty long wait lists to get in,” said Dr. Audria Denker, the executive vice president of nursing for Galen College of Nursing.

She said the college has decades of experience and 20 campuses across the country that often attract a different kind of student.

“Our average age of our students are in their early 30s, second-career students. The fact that we admit four times a year gives additional people opportunities,” Denker said.
