Operation Samahan, also known as Opsam, is a federally qualified health center that was founded in 1973. Samahan is a Filipino word that translates to “working together.” Learn more about Opsam here.

FOX 5/KUSI spoke with Mary Torres, whose mother, Perla, was a nurse and one of the founders of the clinic. Torres says her mother and a group of other health care professionals began operating a makeshift clinic, providing free care to immigrants from the back of the building.

Eventually, the demand for services grew, leading to the formation of a network of clinics spread across San Diego County.
