Charge in fatal crash outside Cole’s is for falsified DMV documents

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – The Erie County District Attorney’s office accused the driver involved in a fatal accident outside of a popular bar in July of submitting falsified documents for the window tints on his vehicle, but concluded that the tints did not contribute to the collision.

26-year-old Mohammed Tanbir of Buffalo was charged with three counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument, a Class D felony, after he allegedly falsified a doctor’s signature on forms submitted to the Department of Motor Vehicles for his window tints in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Family members told News 4 that Sydney Lohr, a 21-year-old college student, was leaving work at Cole’s around 11 p.m. on a rainy July night when she was hit by a car while attempting to cross Elmwood Avenue.

Lohr was described as a “beautiful, brilliant, and charismatic girl with a heart of gold.” She was set to become a senior at St. Lawrence University.

An attorney for the Lohr family told News 4 WIVB on Friday that they “completely disagree with the statement from the District Attorney’s Office today that Tanbir’s heavily tinted front windshield did not contribute to this collision. To the contrary, our investigation has revealed that Tanbir’s illegal window tints played a significant role in the happening of this crash and Tanbir’s failure to see Sydney as she attempted to cross Elmwood Avenue.”

Tanbir is scheduled for a return appearance on April 17. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 7 years in prison.
