One of Union County’s top high school basketball players is coming to Mecklenburg

One of the best players in Union County is leaving.

Piedmont High’s Cade Tyson is transferring to Carmel Christian, a private school in southeast Charlotte, Carmel coach Joe Badgett told the Observer.

Carmel Christian has won two N.C. Independent Schools state championships in the past three seasons.

Tyson, a 6-7 sophomore wing, averaged 22.9 points and 8.3 rebounds per game last season. He was the leading scorer in Union County.

His brother, Hunter, is a sophomore at Clemson. In high school at Piedmont, Hunter Tyson scored 2,131 points from 2014-18. That is the second-most points in Union County history behind Forest Hills’ Nas Tyson (2,169 from 2015-19).

Cade Tyson’s father, Jonathan, ranks No. 7 in Union County history. Jonathan Tyson scored 1,650 points at Sun Valley High School from 1992-96.

Badgett said Catawba Ridge 6-8 forward Luke Krawczyk is also transferring to Carmel. Krawcyzk will reclassify back into the class of 2022 and repeat his junior season.

Last season, Krawczyk averaged eight points, six rebounds and two blocks.

Badgett said Carmel Christian returns three starters -- 6-8 junior Ben Burnham, 6-4 junior Glynn Bynum and 6-3 junior Justin Taylor. Burnham was an all-state pick last season. Taylor has offers from Winthrop and South Florida. He is getting interest from various Ivy League and Stanford. Burnham has offers from Winthrop and Mount Saint Marys. Bynum has interest from Army and Princeton.

Virginia coaches called Badgett about Tyson Thursday.

Butler High 7-foot center Patrick Wessler is transferring to Combine Academy in Lincolnton, which is coached by former North Carolina point guard Jeff McInnis.
