One SC teen killed, another injured during park shooting in Chester, police say

A South Carolina teen died Friday and a juvenile received non-life-threatening injuries in a shooting in Chester, officials said.

DeMarcus J. Sanders, 19, was shot Friday before 7 p.m. at a park on Odom Street, said William Petty, Chester Police Department chief. He died later at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, according to Petty and Chester County Coroner Terry Tinker.

A 17-year-old male who has not been identified also was shot in the leg, Petty said. That juvenile’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, Petty said.

No arrests have been made, Petty said Monday. Chester police and the State Law Enforcement Division are investigating.

A Chester police incident report stated a person who called 911 told officials the shots came from a car. No other details about the shooting have been released.

The park is located in a residential area east of downtown. Chester is a city of around 5,000 people between Rock Hill and Columbia.

The fatal shooting of a teen is the second in Chester in six weeks. In early April a 16-year-old Chester boy died after being shot near a different park in a case where a teenaged girl was charged.
