Man dead in southeast Columbus after police involved incident
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – One person is dead and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation investigating a shooting in the far southeast side of Columbus.
At around 4:02 a.m. officers responded to the George’s Creek Apartment complex on Georges Creek Drive, off Gender Road near Canal Winchester. There, police are investigating a shooting that caused the closure of a portion of Gender Road near the incident.
Man with ties to Columbus added to FBI’s most wanted list
Columbus police requested BCI to investigate an “officer-involved critical incident”, according to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office. CPD said in a release that officers responded to a man threatening to take his own life and the lives of those who were in the house with him.
The man, later identified as 21-year-old Rafael Warfield, reportedly shot at the officers, who then returned fire. The man, who police have not identified was pronounced dead at 4:32 a.m.
Police erroneously told NBC4 how the suspect died, but retracted the information at 11 a.m. A CPD spokesperson said they do not know the exact circumstances of how the gunman died and are still investigating.
No officers were injured in the shooting and the scene remains active as authorities continue to investigate what led to the incident.
It is the third fatal shooting involving a Columbus police officer since Saturday. One man was killed after firing a rifle at officers on McCallister Avenue while Another man was killed after engaging in a shootout with police, who followed him from an Amazon warehouse where he shot at a security guard.
