One person is killed and a child is hurt in crash involving school bus, SC police say

One person was killed and two others — including a child — were hospitalized Monday morning following a crash that involved a school bus, work van and motorcycle, the Lexington Police Department said.

The multi-vehicle collision happened in the 100 block of Industrial Drive, according to police. That’s near Exit 55 on Interstate 20.

The motorcycle rider died at the scene, police said.

The Lexington County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the motorcycle rider.

There were seven students on the Lexington 1 school district bus, and they have been reunified with parents and guardians, according to police. Information about the students’ ages, and which school they were heading to, was not available.

One of the students was injured during the crash, and police said the child suffered “a minor cut on the arm.” EMS took that student to an area hospital, according to police.

The driver of the work van was also taken to the hospital by EMS, police said. Further information on the student and the van driver’s conditions was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if any of the people in the bus and van were wearing seat belts, or if the motorcycle rider wore a helmet.

Information about the cause of the crash wasn’t available, but the wreck is being investigated by police, the coroner’s office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Police said that Industrial Drive, from S.C. 6/South Lake Drive to Zenker Road, is expected to be closed for several hours because of the investigation.

Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area if possible. For those who need to get to Industrial Drive, a detour has been set up from South Lake Drive to Gibson Road to Bickley Road to Zenker Road to Industrial Drive, police said. The same route is available for drivers heading from Industrial Drive to South Lake Drive.

“Be alert for stopped traffic and officers who are directing traffic in the area,” police said.

Through last Wednesday, 334 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 21 people have died in Lexington County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 45 deaths reported in the county in 2023, DPS said.
