1 child killed, 1 hurt in shooting at west Fort Worth apartments; extra security at school

One child is dead and one is in the hospital after they were both shot in west Fort Worth on Sunday afternoon, according to police.

The shooting happened around 1 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 2900 block of Broadmoor Drive after the two juveniles were approached by three unidentified people, according to police.

The two victims were together when the three suspects approached them and at least one pulled a handgun and shot them.

Officers arrived to find the two male victims in a breezeway, with one of them already dead at the scene, according to police. The other boy was taken to the hospital in unknown condition for treatment. Authorities have not released the name or ages of the children who were shot.

Police said the suspects fled the scene before officers arrived. The motive for the homicide is under investigation.

The Fort Worth school district said in an email to parents that police were at nearby Leonard Middle School to provide extra security on Monday morning and that counseling would be available to students there throughout the day. WFAA-TV reported that at least one of the victims was believed to be a student at the middle school. The school district did not confirm to the Star-Telegram if one or both students attended the school.

Leonard Middle School said in the email to parents that the increased police presence was out of “an abundance of caution” because of an incident that took place over the weekend “impacting our school community.”

One eighth-grader told WFAA that students had to go through a security checkpoint to get into the middle school Monday and were not allowed to keep their cellphones. Students were told they’d have to stay in one room all day instead of rotating classes as usual, the eighth-grader said. Many parents picked their children up early from Leonard Middle, WFAA reported.

Fort Worth ISD said the extra security will continue on Tuesday. Thursday is the last day of classes for students before summer break.

No arrests have been announced as of Monday afternoon. A witness told KXAS-TV that the shooter wore a mask.
