One man killed in officer-involved shooting in Riverton

UPDATE 3/8/24, 3:08 p.m.: The deceased suspect in this incident has been identified as 40-year-old Joshua Watson.

Authorities said Watson was a Riverton resident and had a criminal history “well-known” to Riverton Police.

Next of kin has been notified.

ORIGINAL POST: RIVERTON, Utah (ABC4) — One man is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Riverton on Friday, March 8.

The incident reportedly started in Sandy around 5 a.m. as a carjacking. Authorities tell ABC4 the suspect led officers on a pursuit across the valley, ending in Riverton in the area of 138th South. Officers in the area reportedly used spike strips to stop the vehicle.

As officers approached the suspect, he allegedly presented a weapon, prompting officers to open fire. The unidentified suspect was struck and pronounced dead at the scene.

It is unclear if the suspect fired any shots, however, no officers were injured in the incident.

An Officer Involved Critical Incident team from Salt Lake City responded to the scene to conduct an investigation into the shooting. Officers from Riverton, Herriman and Sandy were all involved in the incident.
