One killed in officer-involved shooting in Kansas City, Kansas

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that left one person dead late Friday night in Kansas City, Kansas.

According to KCKPD, a silver Hyundai Sonata was reported stolen earlier on Friday. Later that evening, officers received a tip saying the stolen car was near South 7th Street Trafficway and Interstate 35.

KCKPD said that a citizen report came in shortly after, around 11:10 p.m., claiming the stolen car was specifically at the 1500 block of 7th Street Trafficway and that people were running from it.

Around that time, a KCKPD officer was said to have pulled up to the stolen car causing three men to flee the scene. The officer then chased the three men on foot.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the officer chased the three men up the southbound entrance ramp of Interstate 35. During the chase, one of the suspects hid in some thick brush nearby and fired gunshots at the officer from behind. The officer returned fire, striking the man multiple times.

Police said the officer and a second responding officer then took a second suspect — a 16-year-old male — into custody. The third suspect was able to run away from officers and has not been located at this time.
