One injured in train wreck

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – An 80-year-old man from the Westmont area was transported to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center after the vehicle he was driving was struck by a train on Eisenhower Boulevard, near the Kring Street Bridge Wednesday, according to Richland Township Police Department Sgt. Tim Rhoades.

“There was a car or two cars stopped in front of him,” Rhoades said. “The train was coming through the area. The operator apparently accidentally stopped on the tracks, at which time his vehicle was struck by the train.”

Rhoades described the patient as “awake and alert” when he was transported from the scene of the CSX railroad crossing in Richland Township.

Richland police and CSX are investigating.

The initial investigation showed “that the train horn was (sounding), but we haven’t determined about the signals,” according to Rhoades, who added that “there was a flagger team in the area, but they were not actively controlling traffic at the time of the accident.”
