Arrest made in connection to Popeyes shooting in Opelousas

UPDATE, 4/11/24, 12:02 P.M.: Opelousas police have arrested Montel Austin on charges of attempted second degree murder, possession of a firearm by persons convicted of certain felonies and possession of intent to distribute a schedule II CDS. Austin was also identified as the boyfriend of Chelsie Goodley, who was involved in the incident.

The victim was also identified as Travis “Sweetie” Robertson.

An investigation revealed that an altercation between Robertson and Goodley led to the involvement with Austin. Witnesses reported that Austin exited Goodley’s vehicle and shot Robertson before running away with Goodley.

Police found Goodley’s vehicle on North Union St. with Goodley and Austin. During a search, officers found beige rocks suspected to be crack cocaine in Austin’s possession.

Both suspects were subsequently transported to the Opelousas Police Department Special Operations office for further processing.

ORIGINAL, 4/10/24, 9:19 P.M.: OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY)– One person was hospitalized after a shooting at a Popeyes in the 900 block of South Union Street in Opelousas.

The Opelousas Police Department responded to the shooting after receiving a report around 6:20 p.m. Once they arrived to the business, they found a man with an apparent wound in the abdomen area and aid was immediately administered to him.

The victim was brought to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and is not in stable condition, according to OPD.

Authorities currently have one suspect in custody in connection with the shooting. OPD urges anyone with information on this shooting to come forward to help with the investigation.
