One in five people unemployed in the UK are migrants, official statistics have revealed for the first time ever.

New data has shown that some 317,000 migrants in the UK are unemployed, including 98,000 who were born in the EU and 219,000 born outside the EU.

The statistics have also shown that four percent of EU migrants are unemployed, some two percent less than the six percent of migrants from outside the EU who are unemployed.

Despite uncertainty over the future of EU nationals in the UK after Brexit, last year also saw the number of Romanians and Bulgarians working in the UK rising by a third, with a record 362,000 in employment.

It now means that Romaians and Bulgarians make up one in six of all EU migrants living in the UK after a slight decrease in the number of people coming from other European nations.

It has also been revealed that the unemployment level in the UK is at 4.4 percent, its lowest level since 1975 after an extra 338,000 people came into the workforce.

Describing the latest figures, Minister for Employment Damian Hinds said: ‘Over the past year the rise in employment has been overwhelmingly driven by permanent and full-time jobs, as employers continue to invest in Britain’s strong economy.’
