Living as a breathing human under capitalism can be confusing and emotionally taxing on multiple fronts. On one hand, you want nice things, on the other hand, you have a lurking knowledge that most consumption is bad for global human rights. So, we’re excited one of our favorite indie designers is donating proceeds to the ACLU. This feels like a marriage of all things good and well.

The equally stylish and playful NYC-based clothing label Samantha Pleet, which has previously provided Tavi Gevinson with dresses that look like ’90s screensaver patterns, has now decided to take a stand and donate a portion of proceeds to the American Civil Liberties Union.

We’d be lying if we denied that we’re grateful to have another excuse to buy more clothing guilt-free.

Samantha shared her reasoning behind the new pledges towards the ACLU in an email to HelloGiggles. She said:

“We are a small brand that is based on celebrating powerful women of all cultures, ethnicities, religions, and sexual orientations. We are already seeing the Trump administration move forward on policies such as a Muslim ban, border wall and the de-funding of women’s health organizations and we can not stay silent in the face of these injustices that will do harm to so many people.”

Recognizing the urgency of our current political state, Samantha went on to admit that normally the brand isn’t political, but the current situation is not normal.

“We usually stay out of politics but this moment is too alarming, so we must stand in solidarity with those being discriminated against and harmed by our president, and do anything in our power to resist. In that spirit, we are taking a portion of our sales from special events and donating to organizations that are doing the real hard work to counter this administration’s policies, and to provide aid to people whose well-being is threatened. Recent recipients of our donations are Planned Parenthood, Earth Justice, and the ACLU.”
