One driver killed in crash that leaves another hospitalized, South Carolina cops say

One driver was killed and another was hospitalized from a Wednesday crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 1:35 p.m. in Dorchester County, said Lance Cpl. Nick Pye.

A 1999 Lexus sedan was driving west on U.S. 78, and as it was turning onto West Meadow Drive, it collided with a 2015 Chrysler sedan that was heading east, according to Pye.

The Lexus driver died, Pye said.

The Dorchester County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Lexus driver.

The Chrysler driver was hurt and taken to an area hospital, according to Pye. Further information on the Chrysler driver’s condition was not available.

Pye said the drivers were the only people in the vehicles, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if either driver was wearing a seat belt, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Tuesday, 156 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 999 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least six people have died in Dorchester County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 14 deaths reported in the county in 2023, DPS reported.
