One dead in New Year's Day fire in Adrian

ADRIAN — Firefighters responding to a fire Sunday in a mobile home community in Adrian found a person unresponsive inside the home and were unable to revive them.

Adrian city, Madison Township and Adrian Township firefighters were dispatched at 7:51 p.m. to a possible structure fire at the Maple Woods manufactured home community on West Beecher Street, a news release issued Monday by the Adrian Fire Department said.

"Upon arrival firefighters were advised the resident was possibly inside the home," the release said. "Crews immediately entered the home to search for a victim and found an unconscious resident inside. The resident was removed from the home and lifesaving efforts were initiated by Adrian City and Madison Township personnel. Unfortunately, the efforts were unsuccessful and the victim was unable to be resuscitated."

The fire was extinguished and contained to the room where it started, the release said. Emergency personnel left the scene by 11:02 p.m.

The Adrian Police Department and a Michigan State Police fire investigator assisted at the scene, the release said. Raisin Township firefighters were on standby to assist with other emergencies in the city.

The cause of the fire is being investigated but it does not appear to be suspicious at this time, the release said.

Adrian Fire Chief Aric Massingill said in a text message that he is not releasing more information until the victim's family has been notified.
