Off-duty St. Landry corrections deputy killed in Tuesday night Opelousas shooting

UPDATE, 4/24/24, 11 a.m.: Officials have confirmed the person killed in Tuesday night’s shooting was an off-duty corrections deputy with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Chanterria Albert, 23, was employed at the St. Landry Parish jail for less than two years, according to St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz.

“My entire staff and I are mourning the loss of one of our family members as a result of senseless gun violence last night in the City of Opelousas,” Guidroz said. “Corrections Deputy Chanterria ‘Mackey’ Albert was hired on May 10, 2022, in Corrections and served alongside of her mother, Deputy Cherikas Albert. Deputy Albert was only 22 years old and was an exemplary deputy. She will be sorely missed.”

Mason Decker, a witness to the shooting, said many shots could be heard.

“Me and my mom heard about 30 shots and my mom ran out of a room and she went to go grab my two little brother’s from their room, and then we all went in the back, we got on the ground and we went in the bathroom,” said Decker.

PIO Joe Dupree-Anderson said they are working diligently on this case.

“Because it’s an ongoing investigation, we do work adamantly to every call that we receive to answer that call and to try to resolve the issue the best way we can,” said Dupree-Anderson.
